Hair loss can sneak up on you. One day, your hairline is holding strong—and the next, you’re noticing more scalp than style. It’s something that impacts a lot of people in and around Boston. And while it can feel discouraging, there are real solutions that can help you take back control.
At MassDerm Hair Transplant Institute in Beverly, MA, we’ve helped people from all over Greater Boston feel like themselves again. Whether it’s a little thinning or a lot of loss, there are medical and surgical hair loss solutions available.
Why Is My Hair Falling Out?
Hair loss can happen for multiple reasons and each individual’s hair loss trajectory is unique.
Here are a few of the most common causes:
- Genetics: Male and female pattern hair loss (a.k.a. androgenetic alopecia) is super common.
- Hormones: Pregnancy, menopause, or thyroid shifts can lead to hair shedding episodes called telogen effluvium which can sometimes unmask an underlying pattern hair loss
- Health conditions: Autoimmune diseases like alopecia areata or lichen planopilaris or frontal fibrosing alopecia. In general, autoimmune mediated hair loss patients aren’t candidates for hair transplantation, unless their condition is stable and quiescent.
- Medications: Some drugs (like those for blood pressure or cancer) can cause shedding.
- Everyday habits: Tight hairstyles or acute physical or emotional stressors.
Whatever the reason, figuring it out is step one. That’s why every new patient at our Beverly clinic starts with a thorough scalp exam and consultation.
Is a Hair Transplant Right for Me?
Have you already tried a multitude of over the counter options or some prescription hair loss medications?
If you’re dealing with noticeable thinning or balding and haven’t had much luck with non-surgical treatments, a hair transplant might be the next step. The best candidates are men or women who:
- Have healthy donor hair on the posterior scalp
- Understand what the hair transplantation procedure entails
- Have realistic expectations about what a hair transplantation can achieve and what it can’t achieve.
Our team in Beverly is happy to walk you through your options. No pressure, just facts.
Hair Transplant Techniques Near Boston
At our North Shore location, we offer two trusted procedures that deliver lasting results:
1. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
- Follicular units are harvested one at a time from the back of your scalp
- Leaves tiny circular marks instead of a long scar
- No sutures needed
- Patients who typically liked to wear their hair cropped short or shaved may prefer the FUE procedure since it minimizes the appearance of a linear donor scar.
2. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
- Also called “the strip method”
- Removes a small strip of scalp from the back and divides it into grafts
- The strip excision procedure is preferable for most women undergoing hair restoration surgery given that it doesn’t require the back of the head to be shaved in order to harvest the donor hairs.
- Men who generally wear their hair longer and who prefer not to shave the back of the head for the procedure, may prefer the strip excision.
- You’ll have a fine linear scar, usually hidden by surrounding hair
Both methods provide a natural look and feel as a final result.
What About Non-Surgical Options?
While we specialize in FUE and FUT surgical hair restoration, we’re always happy to help you determine if one of these procedures is right for you. If you’re not quite ready for surgery, we’ll give you honest, expert guidance on what to consider next.

Recovery: What It’s Like After a Hair Transplant
Wondering what recovery looks like? Here’s a quick rundown:
- First few days: You can have some redness at both the donor and recipient sites and you can have small crusting at the recipient sites which represent the epidermis around the hair follicles. You may also have some forehead/eyelid swelling as the numbing solution slowly drain through your lymphatics.
- Week one: Crusting slowly resolves and falls off and people are able to start washing their hair again at 1 week with a shampoo that we provide as part of the post-hair transplantation kit we provide patients.
- Week two to four: Some shedding happens of the transplanted hair shafts but the roots stay in and initiate into a new hair growth cycle
- Month 4-6: You’ll start seeing new growth.
- Month 6–12: The full result gradually fills in, with most patients seeing the final result at 12 months but some patients seeing even further growth at 1.5 years.
Hair Transplant FAQs (Boston Area)
How much does a hair transplant cost near Boston?
It depends on the size of the hair transplantation that needs to be performed to meet patient goals. We’ll break it all down during your consult.
Will people be able to tell I had it done?
Only if you tell them. Our work is subtle, natural, and designed to blend right in.
Does it hurt?
We use multiple layers of topical numbing to minimize pain during and after surgery. There is a chance that at times during the transplant, there are some more sensitive areas, we always add more numbing as needed to keep patients as comfortable as possible. Most patients are surprised by how little discomfort they feel.
Do results last?
Yes, in general, transplanted hairs are more resistant to further hair loss than non-transplanted hairs. This is due to the concept of donor dominance, which states that the hairs that were transplanted from the back of the scalp retain the hair loss resistant quality they had at their initial location on the back of the scalp.
